Worked examples
College Calculus Weighting (30% HW, 30% Midterm, 40% Final)
You have 95% on homework, 82% on the midterm exam, and want your current standing before finals. Result: Current Average: 88.3% (Letter B+).
Weighted Points = (95 × 0.30) + (82 × 0.30) + (88 × 0.40) = 28.5 + 24.6 + 35.2 = 88.3%.
Evenly Weighted 4 Assignment Blocks (25% each)
Four project modules each count for 25% of the overall course mark (90, 85, 95, 80). Result: Final Grade: 87.5% (Letter B+).
Weighted Sum = 22.5 + 21.25 + 23.75 + 20.0 = 87.5% exact course grade.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade category by its weight percentage (as a decimal), add those numbers together, and divide by the sum of the weights graded so far.
What if category weights don't add up to 100% yet?
The calculator divides your earned points by the sum of weights completed so far, giving you your true current grade standing.
How do weighted categories differ from unweighted point totals?
In an unweighted point system, every point has equal value regardless of assignment type. In a weighted system, categories (e.g. exams worth 50%) have a fixed proportion of the final grade regardless of how many individual questions or points were on the exam.
What happens if syllabus weights exceed 100%?
If a syllabus includes extra credit categories or mistaken weighting exceeding 100%, your grade is evaluated relative to the total weights specified, and an alert is flagged.
